Prime Minister Narendra Modi bid farewell to Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu in Parliament today (August 8) as he will demit office on August 10 and his successor Jagdeep Dhankhar will take the oath of office on August 11. Naidu was accorded a farewell in Rajya Sabha on Monday with PM Modi and other top leaders in attendance.
Starting his farewell speech, the Prime Minister said that this is a very emotional moment for the House. “Today we are all present here to thank Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu at the conclusion of his tenure. This is a very emotional moment for this House. Several historic moments of the House are associated with your graceful presence,” said the PM in Rajya Sabha.
“Your one-liners are wit-liners. They are win-liners too. It means nothing more needs to be said after those lines. Your every word is heard, preferred and revered and never countered,” added PM Modi, in Rajya Sabha, while giving a speech to outgoing Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President.
Calling himself fortunate to have closely worked with Naidu in different roles, PM Modi said, “Personally, it has been my fortune that I have seen you closely in different roles. I also had the fortune to work with you in some of those roles. Be it your ideological commitment as a party worker, your work as an MLA, your activity in the House as an MP, your leadership as the party chief, your hard work in the cabinet, or your grace as the VP & RS Chairman – I have seen you working devotedly in all your roles.”
The PM also added that Naidu never considered any work a burden. At the end of the speech, the emotional Prime Minister said that even though Naidu is retiring from politics, the former will continue to receive benefits of his experiences. He said, “You have said several times, “I am retired from politics but not tired from public life.” So, your responsibility to lead this House might be ending now, but the nation as well as workers of public life – like me – will continue to receive benefits of your experiences.”
PM Modi, in his farewell speech to Venkaiah Naidu, also explained the symbolic importance of this year’s Independence Day. He said, “We are celebrating such an Independence Day this time, when the country’s President, Vice President, Speaker, and PM are all those people who were born in independent India, & all of them hail from very ordinary backgrounds. I think it has symbolic importance.”
The Prime Minister also hailed Naidu for promoting the use of the mother tongue. He said, “You say that mother tongue is like eyesight, and the second language is like glasses. Such a feeling comes out from the depths of the heart. Every Indian language has been given special importance during the proceedings of the House in your presence.”
Newly elected V-P designate Jagdeep Dhankhar will take oath of office on August 11 – a day after the term of the incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu ends. He will be appointed the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
