Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s mother passes away

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s mother Paola Maino passed away at her residence in Italy on Saturday, August 27. Her funeral was held on Tuesday.

The Congress president had left last week to meet her mother, who was in her 90s. “Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s mother, Mrs. Paola Maino passed away at her home in Italy on Saturday the 27th August 2022. The funeral took place yesterday,” AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolence to Mrs Gandhi and wrote on twitter, “Condolences to Sonia Gandhi Ji on the passing away of her mother, Mrs. Paola Maino. May her soul rest in peace. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the entire family.”

Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are already abroad and visited her hometown. Rahul and Priyanka have visited their grandmother a number of times over the past few years. In 2020, when Rahul Gandhi faced some criticism over his frequent trips abroad, the party had said he was on a personal visit to Italy to meet “an ailing relative”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to Sonia Gandhi. “Condolences to Sonia Gandhi Ji on the passing away of her mother, Mrs. Paola Maino. May her soul rest in peace. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the entire family,” he tweeted

Former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah also tweeted to express his condolences. “I join my father & other family members in conveying our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Sonia Gandhi ji, to Rahul, Priyanka and the entire family on the sad demise of Mrs Gandhi’s mother. May the soul of Mrs Maino rest in eternal peace,” he wrote.
